Garden Tools
One of the most fun parts of gardening is getting out all of our useful, fun to use garden tools. There is nothing better than using some tools that can help you maintain your garden, especially in a cost effective way. Have you ever considered the fact that your garden tools don’t always have to come from your local DIY shop? Let me explain…
One of the first occasions I came across someone using homemade tools was when I popped in to a friend’s house for a visit and found them planting seeds. Nothing new there, my friend is often found in the back yard spending her retirement enjoying the outdoor air. What was strange was some of the tools she was using. Firstly, she was using a piece of bark as a mini trowel! I was taken aback and rather skeptical at first but it wasn’t long until I was convinced that it was actually a great idea. No expense, if it breaks it is easy to replace and you can find plenty in close proximity to any decent sized tree. My friend referred to it as organic gardening and the name just stuck with me ever since.
Another nice idea I observed was using old lollipop sticks to support young shoots. This is a really good way of keeping your plants strong when they are at their most vulnerable. I borrowed this idea from a neighbour of mine who had the most beautiful garden, and my grandchildren love it because I encourage them to eat ice lollies!
Obviously this kind of gardening must run alongside important tools such as lawn mowers (I for one certainly wouldn’t want to use scissors or a butter knife to cut my grass!) but it is worth considering alternative ways of using other tools and methods to supplement your current gardening arrangements. Gardening, like many DIY areas, requires the correct tools to get the best possible results and some tools are simply irreplaceable. I would like to think, however, that the next time you are thinking about doing a spot of gardening you might consider these ideas and save yourself a little money.
